Mother’s Day gift guide for Cool Mums.

Mother’s Day is almost here folks.
Providing many of us with the chance to gift our life giver with something nice to show them how much we care.

Despite approaching 40 I still consider myself to be a pretty cool mum.
Yes, I have more striped tops than I’d probably like and I now carry a ‘big’ bag full of ‘useful’ things.
On the plus side, I’m yet to consider walking shoes ‘appropriate school run attire’ or sport a ‘mum bun’.
Totally cool right?

Right!

When the Mother’s Day advertising campaigns begin I die a little inside.
Just because we have birthed a human or two, we don’t all automatically desire age defying cream, foot scrubs, Winceyette nighties and drawer liners.

Before you think me ungrateful just stop!
I actually don’t want anything for Mother’s Day. Like my Mum, I’m happy with a nice card.

But, some cool Mum’s do like a gift and so, I decided to share with you some of the great things I’ve received lately that would make the perfect Mother’s Day gift for the cool Mum.

Roller Skates

I was AMAZING at skating when I was younger. I loved the freedom of skating everywhere and I used to enjoy a good roller disco – think Cliff Richard in the Wired for Sound video.
Having spent a couple of years thinking I’d really rather like some rollerboots I am now the proud owner of the Rio Roller quad roller skates.

When these bad girls arrived I fell in love. They were just like the skates I had as a child, beautifully retro and rainbow – I had big ideas.
I was going to put on the boots and it’d be just like the olden days, skating would be my transport and I’d be fitter within days. Heck, maybe I’d dabble in some roller derby too!

27 years is a long time.

I laced up my boots and stacked it straight away on the dining room floor.
A few weeks on and I’m still at that Bambi stage with Seth pulling me along the room saying supportive things like

“That’s great Mummy, you’re doing so well”.

Luckily I lost all pride and dignity when I birthed Aoife and so I persist.
I will be back to my former, skating glory….

I got these beauties from Skates.co.uk, where you can find a massive selection of quad skates, inline skates, skateboards….Pretty much anything with wheels.
They also offer free next day delivery on orders placed before 5pm.
You can find their website here.

Jewellery

I like jewellery, I don’t wear it a lot but when I do I like to wear something stylish and a little different that ideally won’t make me turn green.

Jewellerybox sell an abundance of 9ct gold and silver jewellery all reasonably priced.

I’ve always like the idea of stacking rings, oft’ modelled by young trendy sorts with one worn midway down the finger.
It turns out that, as a Mum (or even human that does stuff) this is most inappropriate and it will keep getting caught or fall off. They are no less beautiful when worn at the ‘proper’ place on the finger though.
The stacking rings can be bought as a set like the geometric set I chose, here,  or individually to create your own style.

I love the whole Rockabilly style and in particular the swallow tattoo design. For a few years I have been toying with the idea of getting a swallow tattoo on my collarbone but, despite still being totally cool, I am probably far too old. As a consolation to myself I chose the stirling silver, flat swallow pendant necklace that can be found here, it may not be QUITE the tattoo but it’s still cute.

You can see what Jewellerybox have to offer on their website here. They have a large selection of items at £5 or less so it’s perfect for the kids to use their own money to buy something pretty for Mum.

Pretty house things

At primary school we used to love a good old sing-along in the school hall. We used to sing the classics
‘Roll Out the Barrel’, ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, ‘Jean Harlow (died the other day)’ and my favourite ‘When the Red, Red Robin’.

Despite what this list suggests, I didn’t go to school during the war.

‘Red, Red Robin always made me happy and even now, if I’m feeling a bit rubbish, I sing it to myself.
“Cheer up, cheer up; the sun is red
Live, love, laugh, and be happy”

When I was received the Live, Love, Laugh lightbox, it really made my day.
With it’s bright red background, the motto that’s cheered me since childhood and its pretty darned trendy design, it would make a bloody lovely gift for the optimistic.

It can be wall mounted or sit on a shelf and the acetate can be removed and replaced with other slides to reflect your mood.
The only thing to note is that the USB cable doesn’t come with an adaptor.
You can buy the Live, Love, Laugh lightbox from the Find Me a Gift website – the extra acetates are available at an additional cost.

Cars

OK. Unless you’re really rich, buying your Mum a car is probably out of the question BUT a Supermum, Supercar experience isn’t.
