5 Types Of Holidays For Active Families.

An active holiday is an excellent choice for families. They’re a chance to get children away from screens, and to pick up the right habits when it comes to daily activity. They also tend to come with plenty of fresh air built into the daily routine. On top of everything else, they tend to be enormously good fun, and a chance for families to bond with one another.

But activity holidays come in many different types. But which one might make the best match for your family?

Walking Holidays

Among the most straightforward kinds of holiday activity is walking. The simple act of putting on foot in front of another can be hugely rewarding, especially if you’re hiking through some of the world’s most stunning locations. If you’re on your Mallorca walking holidays, you might venture into Serra de Tramuntana; if you’re in Crete, you might head down into the Samaria Gorge. Wherever there’s natural beauty, the chances are that you’ll need to head out on a hiking trail to really see the best of it. The view from the summit of a trail, what’s more, tends to justify the effort. Make sure that you pick a trail that won’t be too challenging for the very young, and very old, members of your family.

Skiing Adventures

Skiing is a pastime that combines serious outdoor exercise with huge amounts of stunning alpine scenery. It’s something that the entire family can get involved with – but if you’re just starting out, you’ll want to pick out a resort that’s suited to your level of skill. That tends to mean looking for high-quality ski schools, and plenty of easy slopes. Fortunately, there are a number of resorts tailored to the needs of families. There’s Chamonix in France, Innsbruck in Austria, and Zermatt in Switzerland. Along with easy slopes and good schools, these resorts tend to offer a vibrant apres-ski scene, with plenty to do outside the slopes themselves.

Cycling Breaks

If you’d like to cover hundreds of miles in a single trip and see a large diversity of landscapes, then a cycling trip is an obvious choice. You might visit the tulip fields in the north of the Netherlands, or head through the iconic Black Forest in the middle of Germany. The best destinations tend to have a mature cycling culture, and the infrastructure to go with it. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the countryside is – if the trails aren’t well maintained, and the towns can’t deal with cyclists, then you’re unlikely to have an enjoyable experience.

Multi-Activity Getaways

It might be that you can’t quite decide which form of activity appeals to your family. Or, it might be that you need to balance competing wants. In this case, a holiday that brings together many different kinds of activity might be exactly what’s required. You might go kayaking in Croatia, Hiking through the Julian Alps, or Rafting around the Algarve – or, you might look for a resort which offers all of these activities in a single week. If your whole family takes a particular liking to a given sort of activity, then you can make this the basis for your next holiday.

Water Adventures

Getting out onto the open water can be tremendously inspiring. Whether it’s sailing, paddleboarding, or snorkelling, the sea provides a number of opportunities to explore strange parts of the world, and to soak up sunshine during your downtime.
