How to Avoid Caregiver Burnout When Looking After an Elderly Parent.

When you are taking care of an elderly parent there will be a lot on your plate. It can get overwhelming at times. There’s a lot you can do to make sure that this is the case. However, when you’re in the thick of things it can be a bit confusing and you may feel trapped in a cycle of tiredness. 

Here’s a look at some of the main things you can do to ensure things are a little more manageable.

Make Self Care a Priority

The first thing you’re going to need to do is to make sure that you are taking care of yourself. When you are a caregiver it’s easy for you to swim in a pool of other people’s needs and wants and forget your own. 

 Make sure that you are not forgetting all the things that you need to do to make yourself joyous and happy. Pampering and nurturing yourself is not a selfish act.

Pouring into yourself so that you’ll be better able to pour out to others is a must.

Once you do you will find that you feel wonderful. Put on your dancing shoes and become footloose and fancy-free as you go out and hit the dance floor.

Set Realistic Expectations

The truth is that burnout is often a product of high and unrealistic expectations. You need to understand your limitations and accept them, be sure that you don’t have realistic expectations for yourself, and don’t try to do everything perfectly. 

It’s not every night you’re going to be able to whip up that gourmet meal and put it on the table. Some nights you’re going to have to call in for takeout.

You are bound to fall flat on your face if you try at perfection. You just feel bad about yourself and tell yourself a lie that you’re not doing enough. Your role will evolve over time and it’s important for you to roll with the punches. 

Just be sure you are not beating up on yourself.

Get Support

When you’re in the thick of things you can feel as if you’re alone but the truth is that you’re not truly alone. There are many other people out there who are experiencing the same thing.

Join support groups online where you’ll find like-minded people going through the same things that you are. Visit geriatrician specialist doctors for help if needed.

Don’t shut yourself off from friends and family. The truth is they can pitch in from time to time and help you to manage things so that you can get a break.

Manage Your Time Wisely

Managing your time wisely is also another thing that can help to keep burnout at bay. You can’t do everything at once and you certainly can’t do it all in one day. 

Again it’s time for you to face reality and set realistic goals each day so you don’t end up feeling down in the dumps.

There is no need for you to be walking around frazzled and burnt on. All you have to do is make sure that you’re taking care of yourself and never biting off more than you can chew.
