The clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in and there is certainly a chill in the air. Christmas is most definitely on it’s way.
Now is the time to start considering which advent calendar you will use to count down to the big day!
Gone are the days of finding a simple chocolate behind a door (though I am still totally on board with that), you can now get an advent calendar of virtually anything your heart desires – If you can pop it in a box you can make it into a calendar.
Here are some of the best advent calendars of 2021, there’s something for everyone
Best Advent Calendar for Kids
Thomas & Friends Minis Advent Calendar
If your little one likes to collect Thomas Minis they will love this! With a different train every day, six of those being Christmas themed specials. The calendar opens out to reveal a snowy Sodor scene with track but, as these are exactly the same as the blind bag collectables and so will fit on the any Minis track you may already have and the Super Station. Teen Titans Go!
Stationery calendars are a ‘thing’ now and to be honest, I’d rather the kids get 24 useful items rather than 24 pieces of tut! Seth is a huge fan of Teen Titans Go! So I was over the moon to realise they exists in calendar form! This calendar is jam packed with Teen Titans goodies and is now £14.99 from Amazon with next day delivery for Prime members. If Teen Titans isn’t your jam, the calendar also comes in Minecraft, Avengers and Harry Potter (prices up to £25.99).
Haribo
If you’re looking for a sweet treat that’s a change from the chocolate offerings then why not choose this Haribo advent calendar, chocablock with festive mini-bags, seasonal treats and even a Maoam or two thrown in for good measure. This calendar is sure to be a pleaser during this advent period. The Haribo calendar is available from stockists including Wilko, Poundstretcher and Amazon for £5.
Best Advent Calendar for Nostalgia
Playmobil Back to the Future.
This one is for the big kid in our house – Rory, not me. The Calendar opens out to form the iconic town square of Hill Valley and over advent you can collect 97 pieces including figures, vehicles and accessories – everything you need to recreate scenes from either 1955 or 1985. This is a must for any Back to the Future fan in your life, big or small.
You can buy the Playmobil advent calendar from Smyths, currently for £19.99 or Amazon for £24.99 with free delivery.
Traditional Advent Calendar
If you prefer your nostalgia to be even more traditional then this Caltime traditional advent calendar might be the one for you. My children chuckle like I’ve told the best joke whenever I say that ‘when I were a lass’, calendars were all about the picture behind the door! My parents still love a traditional advent calendar so when I saw this for just £5.99, I had to get it for them. I’m sure they will love it.
Best Advent Calendar for Grown-ups.
Fancy something a little more decadent and a little less chocolate? That Boutique-y Gin Company advent calendar might just be the one for you. It’s a favourite of mine. With 24 different, 3cl wax sealed bottles not only do you get to countdown to Christmas but you also get to try a variety of Boutique-y’s amazing flavours and even try a gin created with botanicals that have visited the Stratosphere! You can find The Boutique-y Gin Company advent calendar from £49.95 at Drinks by the Dram on Amazon.

Advent isn’t all about the humans, Lily’s Kitchen have released their limited edition Christmas Spectacular range so you can treat your pet to a tasty count down to Christmas and some stocking fillers too! Dog Christmas products include a three bird feast, proper treats and of course an advent calendar. For your festive feline there is a Turkey and Ham feast and an advent calendar. Best Advent Calendar for Giving
Reverse Advent Calendar
This is something your local schools, churches or Foodbanks will most likely be doing this year. At a time when 14 million people are living in poverty, food banks are finding themselves helping more people each year. This advent calendar is a little different but is a great way of reminding our kids (and ourselves) that not everyone’s Christmas is about abundance and that any of us could find ourselves needing to use a Food Bank in the future.
Grab a cardboard box and during advent, put an item a day (or more) in it. Toiletries, food and maybe even a few little treats. This box can then be taken to your local food bank or local collection point where the boxes will be distributed to families who need them.
You can find details of your local Food bank and where to donate at The Trussel Trust website.
